Languages for the admin, the shop and your customers

You can use cataloop in English and Spanish. Here is what each language setting controls and what each person reads.

Three things look alike and are not the same: your admin language, the shop language and the number format. Each one answers a different question.

Change your admin language

  1. In the admin header open your account menu (Your account).
  2. In the Panel language group choose English or Spanish. You will see the message saying the language was saved to your account.
  3. The language is saved on your user, so it follows you to another device.

The other two settings

  • Shop language (in Settings, the Shop card): what your customers read only when they have not chosen a language, their record has no Preferred language and their browser asks for neither English nor Spanish.
  • Language and number format (in Settings, the Prices and stock card): only how prices and dates are written. It translates nothing.
  • The list of formats includes Portuguese (Portugal), which only gives Portuguese-style numbers and dates. There are no Portuguese words: someone using it reads the words in English.

What your customer sees

  • Your customer changes the language with the Language select in the catalogue header. Their choice beats everything else and changes only the words, never the numbers.
  • If they have not chosen, the Preferred language you set on their customer record is used. If there is none, the browser language when it is English or Spanish; otherwise the shop language; otherwise English.
  • An order PDF always comes out in the language the order was placed in, even if you or the customer switch language later. See proformas and delivery notes.
  • Text you typed yourself, like product or category names, is never translated.
  • Your customer can review their orders in their own language. See My orders.

Good to know

  • Your admin language is the one saved on your user, and it beats whatever your browser asks for. It is also the language of the email the owner gets when an order comes in (English if it was never chosen).
  • An English shop with a Spanish admin, or the other way round, is normal: the shop language belongs to the customers and the admin language belongs to you.
